Navigating Venice Like a Local: An Insider's Guide to La Dolce Vita

ITA Airways: The Way to Fly

My recent journey on ITA Airways was quite delightful, especially considering the airline's extensive upgrades since being taken over by the Italian government in 2020. With an upcoming direct route from San Francisco to Rome and competitive pricing, it's a strong option for those heading to Italy.

Venice Arrival: It's More James Bond Than You Think

Upon landing, a car transfer awaited me, leading to a speedboat that whisked me away to the Gritti Palace. The hotel's dock, situated on the Grand Canal, evoked a sense of maritime valet service.

The Gritti Palace: Classic Venetian Elegance

Checking in was seamless, and I was even accommodated with an early check-in. The hotel captures Venetian elegance perfectly—opulent without being ostentatious. The staff is excellent, the beds are comfortable, and the tranquility is palpable. Breakfast on the canal-facing terrace was a highlight, providing a glimpse into Venetian daily life.

Nostalgia in a Key

The Gritti Palace still uses traditional metal room keys, which might sound old-fashioned but adds a layer of nostalgic charm. Plus, the staff remembers your room number after your initial check-in, so you can easily leave your key at the front desk when exploring the city.

Must-Dos and Dress-Ups

A canal tour is essential for any Venice visit. In addition, I participated in a kitschy yet enjoyable photoshoot, where we donned traditional Venetian attire. It was fun, and yes, we all felt a bit like Venetian royalty for a day.

A Survey of Venetian Hotels

While in Venice, I also toured the St. Regis Venice and Hotel Metropole. The former embraces modernity while retaining a Venetian essence, showcased through the local artwork adorning its walls. The latter is a feast of traditional interior design. Sabering Champagne in a suite with a view of the Grand Canal was a perfect finale to my hotel tour.

A Modern-Traditional Spectrum

If we're talking on a scale from modern to traditional, the St. Regis leans contemporary, the Hotel Metropole dives deep into tradition, and the Gritti Palace finds a charming middle ground.

So, whether you’re a history buff, modern traveler, or somewhere in between, Venice has something unique for you.
